Wilshere Must Not Change His Style

Arsene Wenger has rejected claims that Jack Wilshere should calm down his all-action style of play.

Wilshere is touted as a future England captain, and is a player in the mould of current Three Lions skipper, Steven Gerrard.

The 21-year-old is never afraid to throw himself into the heart of the action, and there is a concern that he will prove injury prone unless he learns to manage his enthusiasm.

After spending more than a year on the sidelines, Wilshere has returned raring to go.

He is not entirely over the terrible injuries that put his development on hold, but that reality is hidden from sight every time he buccaneers across the field.

Over the weekend, Wilshere put himself into the heart of a handful of meaty altercations during Arsenal’s narrow, hard fought win over Sunderland.

And eventually he sustained a knock too many, and was forced off the field injured in the 50th minute.

Such is Wilshere’s importance to Arsenal’s cause that certain pundits suggest he needs to rein in his cavalier approach.

However, Gunners boss Wenger thinks it would be more than counter-productive for Wilshere to pour cold water of his naturally blazing style of football, claiming that Lionel Messi plays in a similar way without any issues.

"It is true the way Jack plays can take its toll,” Wenger admitted.

"But that's his game and he has to take that gamble.”

"His game is to take the ball and go at people. Messi does that as well and he plays without being injured,” Wenger continued.

"You can only make a career with the strong aspect of your game and that's his strength."

"He will be a marked man but you do not want to say 'Don't play like you play'.

"Play like you play, like who you are and express yourself and the way you feel.

"That is the most important thing. But I don't want to talk too much about that as I don't want to give him paranoia.

"He has to be natural and play his game and it is down to the referees to protect him."
