Cameroon have included Chelsea striker Samuel Eto’o in their squad to face Tunisia in the World Cup qualification playoffs in October and November.
It is unclear if Eto’o, who is Cameroon’s all-time top-scorer with 55 goals, intends to honour the call-up, however.
Reports recently emerged that the striker has decided to retire from international football, following a falling out with Indomitable Lions coach Volker Vinke over team selection and tactics.
But the speculation has neither been confirmed nor denied, and so Eto’o’s intentions remain a mystery.
The former Barcelona and Inter Milan superstar recently moved to Chelsea from Anzhi Makhachkala in Russia.
He is taking his time settling back into top level football, and is yet to score a goal for the Blues.
And so despite his unparalleled goal pedigree and experience, it is even debatable as to whether or not he deserves to be in the Cameroon first XI, based on his current form.
But a misfiring Eto’o is surely better than no Eto’o at all. And if Cameroon are to qualify for Brazil 2014, they will surely need the four-time African Player of the Year to help them get there.
