Wenger Wants Gunners Extension

Arsenal boss, Arsene Wenger, has responded to the backing he has received from the club’s major owner.

Stan Kroenke has gone on record to say that he thinks Wenger should be awarded a contract extension.

Knives were out for the Frenchman at the start of the season, as Arsenal missed transfer target after transfer target, and them slumped to a home defeat against Aston Villa on the opening day of the campaign.

But Wenger pulled a rabbit out of the hat by signing Mesut Ozil from Real Madrid, and the Gunners are now top of the Premier League table, and won away from home against Marseille with an injury ravaged squad in their first Champions League group stage match too.

Kroenke is confident Wenger can lead the Gunners to silverware, and the coach says he is up to the challenge this season and beyond.

He has confirmed that he has “had offers” from elsewhere, but says that if he is indeed given an extension by Arsenal, it will be an easy decision for him to accept.

“Honestly, I would love to be here forever because it would mean I am immortal,” Wenger said. “I am not naive enough to believe that, but as long as I am here I’ll do the best for this club as I love this club, of course.

“I am very honoured to have the support of Stan Kroenke and that he thinks I can help the club. That’s a huge confidence vote. Something for me that is very positive.”

Wenger says he will now consider a new contract when he “finds time to sort it.”

And he added: “The good thing with me is I don’t need a lot of talk to extend the contract I have.

“I don’t think that’s the most important thing at the moment. I said I want to focus on the quality of our season and no-one can question my commitment to this club. I want to do well and the question of me staying will be secondary for that.

“I turned many offers down because I rate what I have got here. I always thought this club was special and it is important to know what you want. I rated the qualities this club has shown.”

Meanwhile, after 17 years at the club, Wenger says the Gunners have always been at or near the top of the pile. And that this season, he may have the team to scale the heights once again.

“Over the years, if you analyse the seasons, we were always close and consistently at the top,” he said.

“It is much more difficult to stay consistently at the top than people think.  It’s a very underrated quality. It shows we have put the effort it. We have a team now that can compete.”
