Arsene Wenger has admitted a liking for Napoli striker Edinson Cavani.
But while the Gunners boss insists the London club has cash to burn during January, he suggests a move for Uruguay international Cavani is not imminent.
Arsenal fans have been begging the club to invest in some serious new talent, to give a jolt of life to their moribund campaign.
And Cavani is just the kind of player to excite the Emirates faithful. However, Wenger comes across as cagey as to whether or not Arsenal will tempt Napoli with a genuine bid for the hit-man.
"I like him as a player," Wenger said. "Will he cost a lot of money? That's for sure. Nobody would deny that. Our banker lives just next to me at the moment and he is ready if we find the right player.
"We can spend the money that we have decided to spend if it is for a player we think gives us a plus. But I do not want to speak about Cavani because we have not made an inquiry for him.
"You speak about Cavani … Napoli are playing for the championship and the Champions League [places] in Italy. What is the interest of Napoli to sell Cavani? None. Unless you come there and say, 'OK, we pay twice the price of what the player is worth'."
Napoli are surely intent on holding onto Cavani until the end of the season. Especially considering their Serie A title chances were given a boost last night.
The two points they had been docked for attempted match-fixing by one of their players have been reinstated. And they are now tie in second place on the log with Lazio, just three points behind defending champions and leaders Juventus.
The six-month bans imposed on Napoli defenders Paolo Cannavaro Gianluca Grava were also overturned.
Cannavaro and Grava were accused of failing to inform authorities of a bid by former Napoli goalkeeper Matteo Gianello to fix the result of a match against Sampdoria in 2010.
These developments enhance Napoli’s chances of challenging Juve for the rest of the season, and so the club may well be reluctant to part with their key striker Cavani with the Scudetto in sight.
