Wayne Rooney has been named the new England captain by manager Roy Hodgson on Thursday.
Hodgson named his squad for next month's friendly with Norway as well as their opening Euro 2016 qualifier in Switzerland.
Steven Gerrard, who captain the side at the recent 2014 World Cup, as well as the likes of Frank Lampard were out of the equation, and saw Rooney take up the armband.
"To be named as the England captain is a dream come true for me personally and of course for my family. It is something I will take massive pride in doing," the striker, who was also named Manchester United captain recently, said on his official website.
"As a kid I always loved the occasion of watching a big England game on the television. Back then I had a burning ambition to play for my country. Now to be appointed captain is beyond my wildest dreams.
"I would like to thank Roy and the coaching staff for having the belief and confidence in me to do the job."
England boss, Hodgson, added, "Wayne was really pleased I had chosen him as captain and he is desperate to do a good job for England. It was nice to hear it from him.
"Wayne has a lot to live up to as previous captains have been top men; Robson, Gerrard, Beckham, Lampard, but he knows that."
The squad also contained four uncapped players, namely Calum Chambers (Arsenal), Jack Colback (Newcastle United), Fabian Delph (Aston Villa) and Danny Rose (Tottenham Hotspur).
