Walcott: Silverware Is Possible

Theo Walcott is confident that Arsenal can end their trophy drought this season.

And he traces that belief to a night when ironically the Gunners were eliminated from the Champions League.

Six months ago, Arsenal travelled to the Allianz Arena for the second-leg of their Champions League clash with eventual champions Bayern Munich.

Having shipped three goals at home in the first-leg, spirits were low. But Arsenal gave their Bavarian hosts an almighty scare, winning 2-0 on the night to crash out of Europe kicking and screaming, rather than the timid exit that had been predicted.

Since then, Arsenal have gone on a club record 10-match unbeaten away run in all competitions.

And while they may have tasted shock defeat in their first Premier League match of the season, that aberration against Aston Villa has been glossed over by their rapidly improving and impressive form.

As a result, Walcott thinks their win over Bayern last season was a sign of things to come.

"You go to one of the tough places in Europe and win, you've got to think you are a very good team yourself," Walcott said.

"At times [in the past] maybe we didn't believe in ourselves."

"Someone told me in the dressing room it's 10 successive wins away from home – it's a record,” Walcott added.

“To be part of a team that has done that, in the amount of years that Arsenal have existed, is a great honour and a great achievement for everyone. It just shows how talented these players are."

Arsenal have a lengthy injury list at the moment, but in Aaron Ramsey they have an in-form player who has announced himself this season as if he is a new signing.

And in Mesut Ozil and Mathieu Flamini they have two genuinely new players who have brought distinctive elements of what they have been crying out for.

And so to Walcott, Arsenal’s form and self-belief engenders a confidence that when silverware is decided this season, the Gunners will be in the reckoning.

"We haven't got the biggest squad in the world and we've got a lot of injuries, which doesn't help," Walcott said.

"We've got to stay fit, which is crucial – we don't want to lose any more players. But as soon as the players come back there is going to be more competition for places and that's only going to be a good thing for Arsenal. I think we'll push on and we can definitely challenge [for trophies] this year, for sure."
