Verona Shock Milan

Verona shocked AC Milan thanks to a double from Lucas Toni which handed the newly-promoted Serie A side their first win in the Italian top flight in 11 years.

The 2-1 win, though, was marked with a number of controversial decisions by the referee, but Verona will not care as they picked up their first three points of the season.

It was a real gutsy performance for the Serie A newcomers as they went behind early on to an Andrea Poli goal in the 14th minute.

Verona were not to be out done though, especially at home, and hit back through Toni on the half hour mark.

Toni was left completely unmarked and was able to head the ball past a stranded keeper from close range, 1-1.

Thereafter the home side dominated the game and continued in the same vein in the second 45.

Verona made their pressure tell early on in the second half as Toni grabbed his second in the 53rd minute after concluding a swift counter-attack with a clinical finish.

Milan tried to find their way back into the game and had number of penalty appeals turned down. Verona showed real stubbornness in defence as they held on for the win.
