Uruguay claimed second spot in Group B and a place in the semifinals of the 2013 FIFA Confederations Cup with a comprehensive 8-0 win over Tahiti at the Arena Pernambuco on Sunday night.
With Nigeria unable to beat Spain in the group’s other match it saw Uruguay on six points from their three games while Nigeria sit in third place on three.
Abel Hernandez was certainly the star on the night scoring four of his country’s eight goals.
It was a notable display from the South Americans as they opened the scoring as early as the second minute, Hernandez grabbing his first of the night after nodding home a corner-kick, 1-0.
Hernandez then doubled his side’s lead in the 24th minute as he controlled a long ball from the back, rounded the keeper and side-footed the ball home, 2-0.
Diego Perez found Uruguay’s third three minutes later after initially hitting the post with his header, but the ball fell to him again and he made no mistake with the second effort, 3-0.
Hernandez completed his hat-trick in injury time of the first half, producing a fine finish to make the score 4-0 at the break.
Things seemed to be looking up for Tahiti at the start of the second 45 as Andres Scotti was given his marching orders in the 51st minute for a second bookable offense.
Tahiti’s joy, though, was short lived as they were also reduced to ten men in the 59th minute after Ludivion also received his second yellow card.
Two minutes later and Uruguay found their fifth goal after Walter Gargano's powerful shot was turned home from close range by Nicolas Lodeiro, 5-0.
Hernandez found his fourth goal of the night and his country’s six from the penalty spot in the 67th minute, 6-0.
Luis Suarez was then introduced as a second half substitute and he produced a little cameo scoring two goals in the 82nd and 90th minute to confirm an impressive 8-0 win.
Uruguay will now face Brazil in the semifinals of the competition.
