A single goal from Phil Jones saw Manchester United beat Shakhtar Donetsk 1-0 in a UEFA Champions League match at Old Trafford on Tuesday night, and consequently top Group A.
The home side started the brighter of the two sides and created their first chance on goal in the sixth minute as Phil jones muscled his way past a coupe defenders before seeing his shot from a tight angle beaten away by Andriy Pyatov.
Six minutes later and Shakhtar Donetsk created their first opening as Alex Teixeira rampaged into space on the left flank, but he dragged his shot from the edge of the box just wide.
In the 18th minute United were on the attack again as a defected Shinji Kagawa cross fell to Adnan Januzaj who turned well inside the box, but saw his powerful shot well-saved by Pyatov.
Three minutes later and Douglas Costa came close for the visiting side as he drove into the box, but his low shot fizzed into the side-netting.
In the 33rd minute Wayne Rooney curled a 30-yard free-kick narrowly wide of the goal.
Four minutes later Ashley Young missed the chance of the half as he found himself through on goal and with just the keeper to beat, but he chipped his effort inches past the post.
Young missed another sitter two minutes before the break as Rooney played him through on goal, but again he lashed his shot well-wide of the target.
The start of the second 45 saw the visitors on the attack early on as United failed to clear a left-wing corner two minutes after the restart which allowed Yaroslav Rakitskiy to shoot on goal, but his deflected effort struck the post.
After that, however, it was all United and it seemed only a matter of time before they found the opening goal.
That goal finally came in the 68th minute as Jones smashed the ball home after a corner was diverted into his path, 1-0.
Shakhtar tried to find their way back into the match, but were unable to do so, and it proved to be a costly loss as they exited the Champions League following Bayer Leverkusen’s 1-0 win over Real Sociedad.
The win sees United top Group A with 14 points while Leverkusen qualified for the knockout stages in second on ten points with Shakhtar finishing third on eight points.
