Manchester United got their revenge against rivals Liverpool as they beat them 1-0 at Old Trafford in their Capital One Cup third round clash on Wednesday night.
As anticipated, Liverpool striker Luiz Suarez made his first appearance for the club this season after serving out a lengthy ban for biting Branislav Ivanovic.
It was United who started the brighter of the two though as they camped in Liverpool's half and saw shots from Nani and Javier Hernandez blocked.
Wayne Rooney then saw his fifth minute effort deflected over. The Reds tried to respond five minutes later but Alexander Buttner was on hand to get a vital touch to a cross to the far post with Daniel Sturridge lurking.
Liverpool were growing into the game as Sturridge had an attempt blocked in the 21st minute but despite some neat passing at times, there was no real danger for the rest of the half.
United enjoyed a blinding start to the second period though as Hernandez broke the deadlock with a simple finish from a corner just 40 seconds in.
Jordan Henderson side-footed a terrific chance wide in the 53rd minute as Liverpool looked for a response while Shinji Kagawa clipped the crossbar with a dipping shot.
Liverpool saw Sturridge's header kept out brilliantly by David De Gea in the 72nd minute while Suarez thundered the crossbar with a free-kick moments later.
Rooney was next to be denied as Simon Mignolet punched away his curling free-kick seconds before dealing with a venomous strike from the edge of the area.
Liverpool's best chance to snatch a late equaliser came when Suarez bounced off Jonny Evans and picked out Kolo Toure but the defender shot wayward.
United ran out the clock as they secured their place in the fourth round, and got some revenge for their defeat against their old foes earlier this season.
