Manchester United manager David Moyes says the club has a number of transfer “plates spinning” as the window rapidly closes.
The English champions are yet to make a marquee signing, with a creative midfielder still high on their agenda.
Reports in the British media suggested on Thursday that Moyes is yet to give up on Cesc Fabregas, even though the Barcelona star said earlier this week that he has never considered leaving the Camp Nou.
However, United reportedly believe that if Fabregas does not feature in all of Barca’s games before the transfer window shuts, he will be amenable to leaving.
The Red Devils also think that a bid in excess of £40million will convince Barca to sell.
But Fabregas is not United’s only ‘plate’ in Spain, with the Real Madrid duo of Luka Modric and Mesut Ozil also said to be on their radar.
According to ESPN, the Red Devils have had “lines of dialogue open with Ozil’s representatives since June”, but that the German international is unlikely to leave Madrid because he is one of “president Florentino Perez’s favourite players.”
With Fabregas ensconced at his boyhood club and Ozil the president’s pet, ESPN say “United’s best chance would appear to lie with Madrid star Modric.”
Meanwhile, Moyes admits that he expected a tough first transfer window as United boss, but he is still confident that the club will make some eye-catching signings before the window shuts.
“I’m confident we'll have players in before the start,” he said.
“We're involved in several players we're looking at and that will continue. Will we get them before the deadline? I hope so, but we're working very hard to do so. It was always going to be a difficult window for me personally. I joined on July 1, which has given me a short period.”
