Bayern Held At Old Trafford

A Nemanja Vidic goal was cancelled out by Bastian Schweinsteiger as Manchester United held Bayern Munich to a 1-1 draw in the first leg of their UEFA Champions League quarterfinal match at Old Trafford on Tuesday night.

The first half was controlled by the German team and can only be described by United fans as ‘surviving’.

Bayern controlled the possession stakes and dictated the flow of the game from the onset.

United, though, did have the ball in the back of the Bayern net three minutes in when Danny Welbeck expertly volleyed home from 16-yards out, but the goal was disallowed for a high-foot foul in the build-up.

Bayern soon took control, though, and Arjen Robben showed what kind of a threat he was going to be when he cut into the box from the right flank and fired a shot inches wide of the goal from 16-yards out.

Ten minutes later Franck Ribery tried his luck from long range, but saw his shot sail wide of the post.

On the half hour mark David De Gea had to be at his best for United when he flung himself across the face of goal to tip a 22-yard shot from Robben around the post.

Two minutes later United had their first official shot on target when Welbeck stung the palms of Manuel Neuer from the edge of the box.

United, despite seeing very little of the ball, actually had the best chance of the half when Wayne Rooney slipped Welbeck through on goal in the 40th minute.

The United striker only had the keeper to beat and attempted a cheeky chip which Neuer did well to save.

The half ended 0-0.

The second half saw United playing more enterprising football as Rooney met a cross from the right in the 52nd minute, but he saw his header comfortably save by Neuer.

Six minutes later, however, United took the lead when Nemanja Vidic brilliantly headed home a corner-kick from six-yards out, scoring his first goal in the Champions League in five years, 1-0.

Bayern were not to be outdone and hit back in the 66th minute when a cross from the right was headed into the path of Bastian Schweinsteiger who found the back of the net with a half-volley from 12-yards out, 1-1.

Five minutes later Robben came close to handing Bayern the lead when he curled a 16-yard shot narrowly wide of the post.

Robben was at it again in the 78th minute when his shot from just inside the box skimmed the wrong side of the post.

The night ended on a rather sour note for Bayern who saw Schweinsteiger sent for an early shower after receiving his second yellow card in the 90th minute.

The match ended 1-1.
