Chelsea Score Late To Progress

Demba Ba proved to be the hero for Chelsea after he came off the bench to score the Blues second goal three minutes from time to beat Paris Saint-Germain 2-0 in the second leg of their UEFA Champions League match at Stamford Bridge on Tuesday night.

The result saw Chelsea progress into the semifinals of the competition on the away goals rule after the two leg tie finished 3-3 on aggregate following PSG’s 3-1 win the week prior.

It was a slow start to the game as both teams took a defensive approach early on.

Chelsea, though, knew they had to take a couple of risks and began to venture forward in attack.

The home side, though, suffered a bit of a set-back in the 18th minute when Eden Hazard had to leave the field injured and was replaced by Andre Schürrle

Ten minutes later Frank Lampard nearly gave Chelsea the lead when he saw his 24-yard free-kick on the left-edge of the box brilliantly saved by the keeper.

Four minutes later and the Blues did take the lead when substitute Schurrle expertly turned home a flick on from David Luiz who initially met a long throw-in from Branislav Ivanovic, 1-0 (3-2 on aggregate).

Chelsea dominated the rest of the half, but failed to add to the socreline.

The start of the second half saw the home side continue from where they left off in the first, and they were unlucky not to double their lead in the 52nd minute when a 16-yard shot from Schurrle struck the crossbar.

Two minutes later Chelsea hit the woodwork for the second time after Oscar curled a 22-yard free-kick onto the crossbar.

In the 68th minute Schurrle broke through the middle of the PSG defence, but saw his shot from the edge of the box superbly saved by the keeper.

Edinson Cavani  should have put the result beyond doubt ten minutes later when he broke through on goal, but with just the keeper to beat the PSG man skied his shot over the target from 14-yards out.

Chelsea continued to pile forward after that and finally made their pressure tell three minutes from time as second half substitute Demba Ba forced a miscued Cesar Azpilicueta shot home from six-yards out, 2-0.

The game ended that way which left the aggregate score at 3-3, but saw Chelsea progress into the semifinals on the away goals rule.
