Torres No Longer Swimming Upstream

Fernando Torres says he is enjoying a sea change in form, and is once again nearing his devastating best.

The Confederations Cup is going swimmingly for Spanish international Torres so far, and he leads the competition with five group stage goals.

Before that, he won the Europa League with Chelsea and scored 24 goals in all competitions for the Blues last season, not a bad tally even if only eight were accrued in the Premier League.

He accepts that he made a stumbling start at Stamford Bridge, but Torres says that he is now confident that he is back to his best for club and country.

"In the end I think it is people who remember my first year at Chelsea, which was not good, rather than the current situation," Torres Radio MARCA from Spain’s Confed Cup base in Brazil.

“I am happy with how I'm playing even though I am very demanding. Things are getting back to normal for me.

"I feel great, physically good, despite the season being a long one. I feel very comfortable, strong and quick.”

Meanwhile, El Nino reckons the mutterings of discontent in the Spanish media after La Furia Roja’s 3-0 Confed Cup group stage win over Nigeria prove just how high the world’s best team has set the bar.

Vicente Del Bosque’s team of champions are well known for dominating games just to win 1-0. But their wince inducing strength in depth means anything but a demolition against weaker opponents leaves some harsh critics unsatisfied.

"You win 3-0 in the final phase of a tournament and still people think you can do better," Torres said.

"We have lived through generations of teams that were eliminated, that lost games or thought a 1-0 win was enough. Now the fact that winning 3-0 is not enough shows how far we have come."
