The Name Ronaldo Must Haunt United

The name Ronaldo must be stalking the thoughts of Manchester United ahead of their visit to the Bernabeu this week.

The Red Devils face Real Madrid in the last-16 of the Champions League, and the original Ronaldo and his successor in all-white will both have special places in the build-up.

Already, Portuguese superstar Cristiano Ronaldo has been touted as the difference between the two sides this time around.

The tie is finely balanced, with United on cruise control in the Premier League, and Los Blancos capable of devastating attacking football, despite the fact that they have all but conceded their La Liga title.

CR7 has spoken of the fond memories he has of his time at United, where he says he has been happiest in his career.

It was at Old Trafford where Ronaldo emerged as one of the best players in the world, and from where he won his world record transfer to Madrid.

And it is the man from Madeira who is expected to provide the extra cut and thrust to make Madrid slight favourites against United, who will need to plot to thwart their old boy.

If history is anything to go by, it could indeed be the name ‘Ronaldo’ in lights again this week.

The last time United and Real clashed in the Champions League- in the quarter-finals 10 years ago- it was Brazilian Ronaldo, ‘O Fenomeno’, who sent the Red Devils packing.

The powerhouse striker scored a memorable hat-trick at Old Trafford in the second-leg of the tie at Old Trafford.

The score on the night was 4-3 to United, but 5-6 to Real on aggregate, and Ronaldo left the field to a standing ovation from a shell-shocked Theatre of Dreams.

Over the weekend, CR7 scored his 20th (!) hat-trick for Real Madrid, and United will be simply terrified.

They can only hope Real’s current Ronaldo does not add to his incredible hat-trick tally against them, and repeat the feat of the Spanish club’s original goal machine with the same name.
