This team was put together by Transfermarkt, and they have gone about picking the most expensive players per position on the field in a 4-3-3 formation.

The starting XI features five players from the Premier League, four from LaLiga, one from Serie A and one from France's Ligue 1.

Juventus goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon is the most expensive shot-stopper in history and has held that title since 2001, when he transferred from Parma to the Bianconeri for €52.8 million (R782 million).

Virgil van Dijk's transfer from Southampton to Liverpool this month has seen him become the most expensive defender ever as he cost the Merseyside club €78.8 million (R1.16 billion). The Netherlands international is joined by the Manchester City trio of John Stones, Kyle Walker and Benjamin Mendy in this team's backline.

After many months of speculation, Brazil superstar Philippe Coutinho finally completed his move to Barcelona, seeing him become the most expensive player is the Spanish club's history. Excluding add-ons, Coutinho cost €120 million (R 1.77 billion), which makes him the most expensive player in midfield, ahead of Paul Pogba and Ousmane Dembele.

The front line consists of Real Madrid's Cristiano Ronaldo and Gareth Bale, as well as Paris Saint-Germain forward Neymar, who is officially the most expensive player in the team, and the world, after PSG paid Barca €222 million (R3.29 billion) to secure his services earlier this year.
