The Dutchman was substituted in the second half of his side's 0-0 draw with Everton in the Merseyside derby on Sunday, a result that saw Pep Guardiola's Manchester City replace the Reds at the summit of the league table.
Despite his underwhelming performance at Goodison Park, Wijnaldum's performances in the middle of the park this season have largely overshadowed the arrivals of fellow midfielders Naby Keita and Fabinho, who officially joined the club in big-money moves from RB Leipzig and AS Monaco, respectively, at the beginning of the season.
Many thought Wijnaldum, who was signed from Newcastle United in July 2016, would drop to Jurgen Klopp's bench this season upon the aforementioned duo's arrival at the club, but his performances have made him a vital cog in the club's title bid.
However, the former PSV Eindhoven and Feyenoord star is not the only EPL player who has come on in leaps and bounds since joining his club, as can be seen in a list compiled by FourFourTwo recently.
Sweden international Victor Lindelof joined the Red Devils in July 2017, but struggled to adapt in his maiden season in England's top flight, making less than 20 starts in the entire league campaign.
Having arrived with large expectations as a ball-playing central defender and a massive fee of £30 million (R565 million), excluding bonuses, Lindelof was labelled a flop by many and was even touted for an early exit from the club. However, he has since blossomed under interim manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, and many feel he is now United's most reliable centre-back.
Alex Iwobi is arguably Arsenal's most improved player since the arrival of manager Unai Emery at the Emirates. Despite the player's tendency to blow hot and cold, Iwobi has become a regular starter at the expense of the likes of Mesut Ozil and Henrikh Mkhitaryan. As a consequence, the Nigerian has now already made as many Premier League appearances this season as he did in the whole of the 2017/18 campaign, with 26 matches under his belt and nine games still to play.
