In January 2018, Selecao international Philippe Coutinho joined Catalan giants FC Barcelona for a fee of about €145 million (R2.3 billion), making him the most expensive January buy of all time.
Unfortunately for the former Liverpool playmaker, though, things did not quite work out for him at the LaLiga giants, so much so that he was loaned to German giants Bayern Munich just a season and a half later.
The second biggest January transfer in history also involves Liverpool, but this time with incoming player. Defender Virgil van Dijk joined the Reds from Southampton in January 2018 for €84.65 million (R1.3 billion), a deal that might arguably go down as one of the greatest in the club's history.
The Netherlands international, who is regarded by many as the best centre-back in world football today, recently brought up his 100th appearance for the Merseysiders, with whom he has already won the UEFA Champions League, the UEFA Super Cup and the UEFA Club World Cup titles.
Although he did not officially join Barcelona until the beginning of the current campaign, Frenkie de Jong's €75 million (R1.1 billion) move from Ajax Amsterdam to the Catalan side was confirmed in January last year, which sees him come in at third on the list.
