Swans Reject Time-Wasting Accusations

Swansea are fuming at the suggestion that they instruct ballboys at the Liberty Stadium to waste time when the home side is in a winning position.

The accusation has arisen after 17-year-old ballboy, Charlie Morgan, was kicked in the ribs by Chelsea star Eden Hazard last night.

Morgan was deliberately slowing down the match by shielding the ball once it had gone out of play, and Hazard became so frustrated after tangling with the boy that he toe-poked him in the ribs.

The Chelsea player was sent off, dividing opinion in the football community as to who was more in the wrong- the time-waster, or Hazard for his act of violence.

It emerged after the game that Morgan had tweeted “#needed #for #timewasting”, leading to accusations that Swansea ask their ballboys to cheat for them.

However, the club- who shocked the Blues by eliminating them to reach the Capital One Cup final- insist that their ballboys are under no instruction to slow matches down when it is convenient to the Swans.

"There was no agenda, absolutely not," Leigh Dineen, Swansea's vice-chairman, told the Guardian.

"Stoke, a few years ago, would get the ballboy to wipe the ball down for a long throw and that was something the ballboys were obviously told to do. But certainly we don't line up the ballboys and ask them to waste time. Definitely not."

"If that took place on the pitch, he would be sent off," Dineen added, suggesting that referee Chris Foy did the right thing by dismissing Hazard.

"If a player was lying on the floor and another player had kicked out, the referee would have no alternative but to send him off."

The worst thing about the whole sorry affair, according to Swansea, is that their heroic progression to the final of England’s second tier cup competition is not the major headline story.

“We have played two games against the European Champions and they have failed to score, and I think it's sad that's been overshadowed by this incident," Dineen said.

"It's happened, it's over and done with, they've shook hands and we move on."
