Swans Force Stalemate At Everton

Everton were unable to turn their dominance into goals as Swansea forced a shut out with the game ending 0-0 at Goodison Park.

Everton came into the game fresh off of trashing Cheltenham Town in the FA Cup whilst the Swans were buoyed by their shock victory over Chelsea in the Capital One Cup.

David Moyes’ men had plenty of opportunities to take the lead but failed to take their chances on a number of occasions with Michu hitting the bar at the other end as he attempted to impress watching Spain boss Vincente Del Bosque.

Steven Pienaar was involved for the hosts 10 minutes in as he whipped in a cross for Nikica Jelavic who spun his marker but slipped whilst taking his shot.

The same two Toffees players combined minutes later with a neat one-two that sent Jelavic bursting into the box where he went down under pressure from Chico.

Everton were not able to turn their pressure into goals with Ashley Williams especially excellent at the heart of the Swansea defence.

The mobile centre back was on hand to head the ball off the line just after the half hour mark after Michel Vorm had got a hand to Victor Anichebe’s strike.

Despite being pegged back for most of the half the visitors did manage the best chance of the period as Michu chipped the ball over Tim Howard from the left only to see the ball strike the bar.

Marouane Fellaini shot straight at Vorm as the half came to a close with the Welsh side having survived thanks to some immense contributions from their defenders.

A tight Swansea defensive line limited Everton’s chances on goal during the opening minutes of the second half although the hosts continued to boss the game.

Minutes after the hour mark Fellaini had a good chance after Jelavic nodded the ball down to him but Williams nicked in to steal away from his feet before he shot.

With 15 minutes remaining Baines picked out Phil Jagielka in the box but the defender sent his header over the top from a good position.

With time running out Pienaar managed to float the ball to Fellaini at the back post but Vorm pulled off and excellent stop to deny the Belgian scoring via his head.
