Sunderland Stun United In First Leg

An own-goal from Ryan Giggs and a Fabio Borini penalty secured a 2-1 win for Sunderland over Manchester United in the first leg of the Capital One Cup  Semi-Final at the Stadium of Light.

The home side's first effort fell to Fabio Borini in the 12th minute, the Italian did well to create space for himself but his effort went wide.

Danny Welbeck tried his luck from distance in the 17th minute but the striker's effort lacked the power to trouble Vito Mannone.

Ryan Giggs nearly opened the scoring in the 24th minute with a long range effort which was only kept out by the woodwork.

Sunderland went ahead just before the halftime break through a Ryan Giggs own-goal, the Welshman put the ball in his own net after a low cross by former Red Devil's player, Wes Brown.

Nemanja Vidic brought the visitors level in the 52nd minute with a thumping header, after getting on the end of Tom Cleverley's corner.

Adnan Januzaj tested Mannone in the 54th minute with a volley from distance but the Belgian's effort was fired straight at Sunderland's number one.

Borini came close to putting the Black Cats ahead just two minutes later, the Italian latched onto  Steven Fletcher's knockdown before shooting just wide of the post.

David De Gea was called into action in the 61st minute, after Sebastian Larsson's volley from close, was brilliantly saved by the Spaniard.

Borini put the home side ahead in the 65th minute from the penalty spot, after Cleverley was judged to have brought down Adam Johnson in the box.

Januzaj squandered a chance to equalise for United in the 78th minute, Antonio Valencia played in the teenager, who scooped his effort over the bar.

Michael Carrick tried his luck from long range in the 90th minute, but the midfielder's effort went well wide of the post.
