In the early La Liga game on Sunday Valencia kept the pressure on Real Sociedad for the final Champions League spot by thrashing Rayo Vallecano 4-0 away from home.
Roberto Soldado scored twice before the break, while Andres Guardado and Nelson Valdez completed the rout in the second half.
The result was Valencia's second consecutive 4-0 victory and means Ernesto Valverde's side temporarily move one point ahead of Real Sociedad, who host Granada on Monday.
Rayo's own ambitions of making it into the Europa League appear to be slipping away and they remain 10th in the league, having played a game more than their rivals.
In the late afternoon game, Real Betis boosted their European hopes after ending a four-match winless run with a 1-0 victory over relegation-threatened Celta Vigo.
Ruben Castro's goal midway through the second half decided things in Betis' favour as they kept the heat up on stuttering Malaga in sixth spot.
For second-bottom Celta, though, Sunday's result was another damaging setback following their recent mini-revival and they are now three points adrift of safety with just two games to go.
The last La Liga game on Sunday saw Malaga and Sevilla play to a goalless draw which sees Malaga in sixth place on the table, four points behind fifth place Real Sociedad and two points ahead of Real Betis.
For Sevilla they are in eighth place, five points adrift of Real Betis, but tie on points with ninth placed Getafe.
