Goals from Filip Daems, Raffael and Alvaro Dominguez saw Borussia Monchengladbach come from a goal behind to win the match.
The result sees them up to sixth place on the table with 45 points from 28 matches and still with a chance of playing in the Champions League next season.
Hamburg remained in the relegation zone, second from bottom, in 17th place on 24 points.
The other Champions League match of the day saw Werder Bremen also come from a goal behind to beat Hannover 2-1.
Sebastian Prodl scored in the 90th minute to earn Werder Bremen the three points that takes them to 12th place on the table with 32 points.
Hannover slipped below them to 13th place on 29 points.
