Sturridge Hands Liverpool Win

A Man of the Match performance from Daniel Sturridge guided Liverpool to a 3-1 win over Sunderland in a Barclays Premiership match at the Stadium of Light on Sunday.

Sturridge scored the first goal and set-up a brace for Luis Suarez who scored his first two goals of the season.

Liverpool started quite brightly and had a chance on goal early on as Steven Gerrard forced Kieran Westwood into a fine save from a 25-yard free-kick in the ninth minute.

After that, however, Sunderland really took control of the match and were unlucky not to take the lead in the 24th minute when Sebastian Larsson struck the crossbar with a 30-yard free-kick.

Three minutes later, though, and Liverpool took the lead very much against the run of play as Daniel Sturridge headed home a Gerrard corner-kick, 1-0.

Liverpool then doubled their lead ten minutes later as Sturridge turned provider. The Reds striker beat a couple of defenders before playing an inch perfect pass for Luis Suarez to tuck home, 2-0.

The second half saw Sunderland try to mount a comeback and they managed to pull a goal back seven minutes after the restart as Emanuele Giaccherini latched onto a rebounded save to score, 2-1.

Liverpool, though, found their rhythm and began controlling the flow of the game.

In the 66th minute Victor Moses came close to scoring the third goal for Liverpool when he let rip with a powerful shot form an acute angle, but saw his effort brilliantly saved by Westwood.

Suarez put the result beyond doubt two minutes form time as he scored his second of the afternoon with a clinical finish after being set-up by Sturridge again, 3-1.
