Tottenham Hotspur have failed in a bid to sign Brazilian international striker, Leandro Damiao, on transfer deadline day.
Damiao has been a long-term target for Spurs, who have a sporting agreement with his Brazilian club, Internacional.
However, it is believed that the two clubs could not in fact reach an agreement over Damiao’s transfer this time around.
Spurs’ bid is thought to have been in the region of £13m, significantly less than Damiao’s official release clause of £42m.
While they may have failed to secure the striker today, it is likely that Spurs will be banging on his door again at the end of the season.
"The offer was well below what we expected," said Inter's director of football, Marcelo Medeiros.
"However, it is possible that the striker could go in the next [transfer] window."
The thwarted deal for Damiao will come as a blow to Spurs.
The London club initially made light of the loss of Jermain Defoe to injury and Emmanuel Adebyaor to Afcon 2013 duty, but it seems they were desperately seeking striking reinforcements on the sly.
