PSG’s two best-paid players and biggest stars let them down last night, as they crashed out of the French Cup.
The big-spending Ligue 1 club had hoped to complete a league and cup Double this season, but Evian ended their cup dream at the quarter-final stage after a penalty shootout.
PSG’s superstars Zlatan Ibrahimovic and skipper Thiago Silva missed the Paris club’s first two spot kick attempts after the match ended 1-1 in regulation time, to send Evian through against the odds.
Javier Pastore had given PSG the lead after just eight minutes, only for Evian to grow into the game. They were fully deserving of their equaliser, scored by Saber Khlifa just before half-time.
In the second half, Ibra missed a gilt-edged opportunity to restore PSG’s lead, slamming the ball against the woodwork.
The Champions League quarter-finalists then had Thiago Motta sent off for kicking an opponent in the knee, and were lucky to survive until the end of the match on level pegging.
Their luck ran out during the shootout however, when their best players fluffed their lines from the spot, resulting in their elimination.
PSG are left to turn their attentions to their Ligue 1 season run-in. They are nine points clear at the top and should be home and dry.
Evian meanwhile, will hope their cup heroics give them the momentum they need to escape the drop, with just three points separating them from the relegation zone.
