Atletico Madrid started the defence of their league title with a disappointing 0-0 draw with Rayo Vallecano at Campo de Futbol on Monday night.
Atletico were without manager, Deigo Simeone, after the Argentine was banned for eight games, following his sending off in the Spanish Super Cup clash against Real Madrid.
After a slow start to the game, the first chance arrived in the 26th minute, as Mario Mandzukic headed inches wide of the post, after being picked out by Ansaldi.
And Manzaukic came close two minutes later, but the Croatian fired his effort straight at the goalkeeper from close range.
That was as good as it got in the first half, as neither side showed any urgency in the latter stages of the first half.
However, the home side almost took the lead two minutes after the halftime break, as some great work down the left flank set up Bueno, who placed his effort just wide of the upright.
Rayo Vallecano striker, Manucho, almost gifted his side the lead in the 72nd minute, but the striker's glancing header forced Miguel Moya into a fine one-hand save.
It was Rayo who did all the attacking in the second half, while they also looked the most likely to grab the winner in the closing stages of the game.
While Los Rojiblancos failed to register a single effort on target throughout the second half.
