Somma Sits Out Leeds Loss

Barnsley clawed their way off the bottom of the Championship table as a second half brace from Chris Dagnall handed them a 2-0 win over Leeds.

The managerless hosts put the turmoil of recent weeks behind them as they got a second league win on the trot at the expense of their Yorkshire rivals.

Neil Warnock chose to field the more recognised strike partnership of El-Hadji Diouf and Luciano Becchio which meant that Davide Somma was resigned to the bench as he continues to prove himself following his lengthy absence.

Having made frequent appearances off the bench in recent weeks, even scoring against Nottingham Forrest, the South Africa international had to content himself with a spot on the bench for the game’s entirety.

Barnsley’s interim manager Dave Flitcroft would have been pleased with what he saw from his team in the opening exchanges as they tested Paddy Kenny after just 80 seconds.

The Tykes had a penalty appeal turned down and Jim O'Brien again had a shot on goal following his effort in the opening two minutes.

Jim McNulty's header was cleared on the line by Rodolph Austin and Dagnall went close twice as the hosts went into the break completely on top.

Leeds had a chance minutes into the second period but the on-loan Ross Barkley shot well wide before Barnsley finally got a deserved goal.

After Dagnall was up-ended by Sam Byram he picked himself up to send Kenny the wrong way from 12 yards 63 minutes in.

The advantage was doubled three minutes later as Dagnall showed a lovely turn of pace before shooting low into the corner to seal a much needed three points.
