You're Invited: Sir Stanley Matthews Tournament In Cape Town

With the Sir Stanley Matthews Tournament taking place in Hout Bay, Cape Town, in April this year, here is all the information you need regarding the wonderfully unique event that celebrates diversity, togetherness and talent!

Hout Bay United will host the tournament between 14 April and 18 April 2022 as a celebration of the life of Sir Stanley Matthews, a former England international, and as a fundraiser for the Hout Bay United Football Community Trust in one of the world's most breathtaking cities.

"The Sir Stanley Matthews International Tournament (#SSMIT) is hosted as a partnership between Hout Bay United Football Community Trust (HBUFC), The Stoke City Community Trust & The Sir Stanley Matthews Foundation. The tournament has been designed to celebrate Sir Stanley Matthews' legacy and to fundraise for the Hout Bay United Football Community Trust," a press release read.

"Through #SSMIT, we bring together talented boys and girls footballers from around the world to play against each other within a positive, uplifting, supportive and competitive sporting environment. We promote the principles of fair play and stand united against any forms of discrimination.

"The tournament is an invitational event that brings together the best South African academy teams with the best overseas development teams to create a showdown that will help raise the standard of South African youth football and coaching, and provide an opportunity for South Africa's most talented U14 and U16 players.

"More than that, 27 years after the end of apartheid, South Africa is, according to the World Bank's calculations, the most unequal country on earth. HBUFC believe in the power of football to unite a diverse community. And the power of a community to transform by investing in our youth as a unified team.

"Our goal through the #SSMIT is that football can be used to build friendships and trust and develop a global network creating a community that together offer support, opportunity and a pathway, giving the best chance for our youth to fulfil their potential."

High-profile football personalities such as Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp have previously visited Hout Bay United in Cape Town, and, along with his agent, he has made generous monetary donations to the club that have surpassed the R1 million mark!

Clubs attending the tournament can send a minimum of two coaches to attend a workshop on 11 and 12 April, which will be hosted by Stoke City Academy coaches.

Why Stoke City? Sir Stanley Matthews spent the bulk of his career at the Stoke-on-Trent-based club, which is proudly the oldest member of the English Football League.
