Barcelona president Sandro Rosell has once again declared his interest in extending the contract of his superstar, Lionel Messi.
Rosell already told media last week that he “will move heaven and earth for Messi to stay” at the Blaugrana while he remains president.
Messi’s current deal runs until summer 2018, but Rosell would have no problem in signing a new contract to ensure the Argentine forward is the best-paid player in world football.
“I have not spoken to him,” Rosell said on Thursday.
“But my office door is always open because he should be the highest paid player in the world.
“That’s because he is the best player in the world.”
Messi is currently on a deal worth around €13m (excl. bonuses) per season until 2018, which is far lower than Cristiano Ronaldo’s new salary of €21m. The Real Madrid star signed his five-year contract extension in September this year and is since the highest paid football.
Ronaldo’s new salary blows Messi’s current deal out of the water and is also at least double of what Neymar earns.
It remains to be seen whether Rosell and Messi will negotiate a new deal when the Argentine returns to Barcelona as he is currently recovering from injury in his home country.
