Shaky Red Devils Face Deadly Shakhtar

Robin van Persie is fit to play for Manchester United in their Champions League tie against Shakhtar Dontesk in the Ukraine tonight.

"He is fit," said manager David Moyes of the Dutchman.

"We will make a decision whether we start him or not. He is as good as anybody I have seen. His football common-sense is fantastic and he is a great goalscorer."

The Red Devils will certainly need their best players at full tilt if they are to take a positive result home with them to England.

Moyes has been at pains to downplay expectations so far this season, and after United crashed at home to West Brom at the weekend, he warned that reaching the knockout stage of the Champions League will take some doing.

Suggesting that United might lack “the five or six world-class players” needed to win the competition was hardly going to go down well in Manchester, even if the comment did come on the same day as news of a £50 million transfer kitty made headlines.

And so Moyes has now quickly insisted that in fact winning the Champions League, as tough as it seems, remains on United’s agenda.

"Of course we'll try to win the Champions League," Moyes said ahead of United’s clash in Donetsk.

"That's part of the job at Manchester United and I'll do everything I can to try to make that happen."

United have lost three out of six competitive matches already this season, and Shakhtar will be smelling blood.

The Ukraine team is jam-packed with Brazilian attacking talents like Fred, Bernard, Fernando, Douglas Costa and more, with a steely Eastern European spine.

And their former Arsenal forward, Eduardo, has warned that they believe they can afflict another demoralising defeat on the English champions.

"We have the opportunity to win this game," Eduardo said, according to Sky Sports.

"United may be in trouble but they are still strong and we have to concentrate.

"But they will be under pressure even if the teams have a different mentality in the Champions League and raise their game.

"We beat Arsenal here a few years ago and Chelsea last season. We always play very well at home."
