Perhaps the most unexpected transfer of the January window so far is Alan Hutton’s move to Mallorca.
Scottish international Hutton will join La Liga strugglers Mallorca on loan until the end of the season.
The Mediterranean island side will have the option to make Hutton’s move permanent after the campaign.
28-year-old right-back Hutton has fallen out of favour at Villa Park, and has not featured in their miserable 2012-13 campaign.
It is increasingly rare for British players to venture abroad, and so Hutton’s left-of-centre move to Spain is interesting and refreshing.
He will become the only British player plying his trade in La Liga.
Life will not be easy for former Tottenham Hotspur player Hutton however.
He is trading one relegation battle for another, and will have to grow accustomed to a new style of football, language and culture.
However, Hutton’s transition will probably be worth it.
After all, he is also trading the dismal Birmingham mid-winter for life on Mallorca, one of the most popular tourist destinations in the temperate and beautiful Balearic archipelago.
