Schizo Gunners Confound Wenger

Last season, Arsenal started the campaign like a heavy drinker with a hangover, but ended it as if their Grandpa powder had finally dissolved and kicked in.

This season, that seems to be the way they play individual games.

Last night against Liverpool, the Gunners again proved themselves to be a team of two halves.

They fell to a two-goal deficit, defending like balloons that have had their knots untied.

But a late blitz of swashbuckling attacking fervour saw Arsenal plunder two quick fire goals, to earn them a share of the spoils against an equally hot and cold Liverpool.

Arsenal’s two-faced displays are a conundrum Wenger is grappling with.

"There is not always a rational explanation," Wenger told reporters after the game.

"Sometimes you have wait until the other teams drop a little bit to get complete domination of the game.”

Wenger hit the nail on the head in his assessment of events at the Emirates: defensively the Gunners were one big hole in the fence.

In attack however, they were like private security guards rushing to a rich man’s distress call in a gated community.

"We didn't give out big security tonight defensively but on the other hand, when you see what the spirit is in the team, and what the quality is going forward, you smell that something can always happen at any moment," he said.

Liverpool meanwhile, were disappointed to ship two goals to throw away three points.

However, their radical improvement from their shambolic FA display against Oldham did not go unnoticed by manager Brendan Rodgers.

"I never had any second thoughts about us getting a reaction," Rodgers said.

"It's a game we should have won.

“We didn't, but we showed great resilience and quality and had other chances to get other goals. I'm very proud of the team."
