Schalke Upset Dortmund

Schalke 04 continued their excellent run of form after beating the defending Bundesliga champions Borrusia Dortmund 2-1 on Saturday.

Dortmund only managed to respond to Schalke’s two first-half goals with one of their own in the second.

Schalke have subsequently leapfrogged Eintracht Frankfurt into fourth place on the log, while Dortmund remains in second.

Schalke had an excellent first half, with more attempts at goal than their opponents.

They were rewarded with their first goal in the 12th minute when Julian Draxler picked his spot from the centre of the box, slotting the ball into the bottom left corner.

Despite Dortmund having more of the possession in the first half, they were unable to capitalise on the chances they had.

Dortmund came close to an equaliser in the 19th minute with a Jakub Blaszczkowski shot from the right side of the box which missed just to the left.

Both teams continued to create chances, but it was Schalke who converted theirs.

Just after receiving a yellow card, Klaas-Jan Huntelaar gave Schalke their second goal in the 35th minute: a cross presented to the centre of the box headed in by the Dutch international.

Schalke seemed to carry their first half momentum through into the second after Jefferson Farfán forced a save out of the Dortmund keeper in the very first minute.

Dortmind, however, made their intention of a comeback clear with two chances in the first five minutes of the half.

The two-goal deficit was reduced to one in the 59th minute, when Robert Lewandowski picked up a well-weighted through ball by Blaszcykowski, and slotted it home from the centre of the box.

Dortmund were the dominant side in the second half, but were just not able to break the Schalke defences.

Schalke did have their odd chance too, particularly in the 74th minute, with a shot from the centre of the box, but Teemu Pukki could not beat the keeper.

Shalke managed to resist the Dortmund onslaught and claimed victory, 2-1.
