Rooney Scores But Is He Happy?

Wayne Rooney was ecstatic to have scored a brace in the Champions League against Bayer Leverkusen on Tuesday night, but refused to answer whether or not he is generally happy at Manchester United afterwards.

Rooney’s strikes saw him join an elite group of just four players to have scored more than 200 goals for the Red Devils, and if he stays at the club for a few more seasons, he will surely become their all-time top-scorer.

“To score 200 for United is great for me,” he said after the game.

“I'm very proud. I'm delighted first of all to be playing and scoring and it's a good result. The first game in the Champions League is always important."

But if he had had it his own way during the last transfer window, Rooney would already be on the path towards leaving a scoring legacy at Chelsea, and grew visibly irritated when pushed on his state of mind at United after his exploits against Leverkusen.

Asked if his good form means he is now “happy again”, Rooney snapped: "Listen, I'm concentrating on my football, as I've done all summer.

“I got my head down and worked hard to get myself fit and ready for the season. I'm delighted with the way I've come back, delighted that I'm back playing and scoring goals.”

Then, asked if he had truly put in a transfer request to leave United, his patience boiled over.

"Listen," he said. "I've just told you. I'm concentrating on my football, which I've been doing all summer."

Rooney’s form helped to make what could have been a tricky night for Champions League debutant David Moyes tricky, and the manager was quick to sing the striker’s praises, even as his mood soured.

"I knew that if you are going to win the Champions League you need to have several world-class players, and Wayne certainly comes into that category," Moyes said.

“You can see what other teams have and we have to keep adding to that and keep the ones we have here.

"I thought he played really well. I remember saying he had a real chance to be one of the all-time leading goalscorers at this club and if he keeps playing like he did tonight, he'll get there.”

Meanwhile, goals from Robin van Persie and Antonio Valencia put the icing on top for Moyes, who could not have enjoyed a better welcome to the Champions League.

"I thought they [the team] played ever so well and scored four good goals and maybe could've added to that. I was really pleased," he said.
