Real Madrid superstar and FIFA Ballon d’Or winner, Cristiano Ronaldo, was hit by a lighter thrown from the stands after the Copa del Rey semi-final second leg at Atletico Madrid on Tuesday night.
Ronaldo scored twice from the penalty spot and the two early goals ended any hopes of Atletico fans to overcome their 3-0 disadvantage and progress to the Copa del Rey final.
However, when the Real forward left the pitch after the game, he was hit by a yellow object – thought to be a lighter – thrown from the crowd at Vincente Calderon.
The superstar was heading for the changing rooms and discussing the game with teammate, Sergio Ramos, when the object caught him on the head.
Following treatment, he appeared to be unaffected and left to join his teammates.
Real Madrid coach, Carlo Ancelotti, later confirmed that the 29-year-old was fine after the shocking incident.
"Cristiano is doing well. He scored two goals and played a key role at the start of the match,” he said.
Record goalkeeper, Iker Casillas, stated that the incident doesn’t reflect on the majority of Atletico’s fans, but it should be followed by serious consequences.
"There is always someone that tries to smear the image of a club like Atlético Madrid and it doesn’t reflect how the majority of their fans are, Casillas said.
“I think the consequences could be serious because it could have hurt a player.”
