Revealed: 3 Final Nominees For CAF African Player Of The Year

CAF has revealed the final three players that will be in contention to win the 2017 African Player of the Year award.

The African Football Confederation cut the original 11-man shortlist down to three with Uganda and Mamelodi Sundowns goalkeeper Denis Onyango amongst the initial nominees.    

Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane are joined by Borussia Dortmund star Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang as the final three contestants who will be part of the Aiteo CAF 2017 Awards gala, with the winner being announced on 4 January in Accra, Ghana.

The second and final phase will involve Head Coaches or Technical Directors of the National Associations taking part in the voting exercise and ten members from the Independent Media and TV Consultants group.

For the first time, captains of the senior men’s national teams of the affiliated National Associations will also take part in the decision-making process of the African Player of the Year and Player of the Year (Based in Africa).

Leicester City and Algeria winger Riyad Mahrez beat last year’s finalist Aubameyang and Mane to the prestigious award though it is recent BBC African Player of the Year winner Mohamed Salah who is being heavily tipped for triumph this time around. 

Other Award Shortlists:

Top 3 finalists for Coach of the Year Award: Gernot Rohr, Hector Cuper, L’hussein Amoutta.

Top 3 finalists for National Team of the Year award: Cameroon, Egypt and Nigeria.

Top 3 finalists for Women's National Team of the Year award: Ghana U20, Nigeria U20, South Africa (Banyana).

Top 3 finalists for Women's National Team of the Year Award: Asisat Oshoala (Nigeria), Chrestina Kgatlana (Banyana) and Gabrielle Onguene (Cameroon).
