Overnight reports suggest that Manchester United have made Cesc Fabregas their number one transfer target for next season.
The Red Devils already broke the hearts of Arsenal fans by signing Robin van Persie, who immediately went on to win the Premier League title with his new club.
And now they want the man RVP replaced as Gunners skipper, when he made an emotional return to his boyhood club, Barcelona.
And while Fabregas did also win his first ever league title with Barca, things have not gone entirely as planned for him after his homecoming.
Third fiddle to Xavi Hernandez and Andres Iniesta in his favoured midfield position, Fabregas has found himself deployed out of position as Lionel Messi’s understudy at the sharp end of Barca’s attack.
He has done reasonably well there, and Barca would like him to stay. But the purchase of Neymar means that Fabregas faces yet another world class challenger for game time.
The way he left Barca as a boy in search of game time at Arsenal proves that Fabregas is not afraid of making uncomfortable decisions, and so if United’s desire to sign him is true, he could realistically opt to pack it in at Barca yet again, for another move to the Premier League.
ESPN suggests that United are keen to sign Marouane Fellaini from Everton, as well as Fabregas’ Barca team-mate, Thiago Alcantara. But the ex-Gunners skipper is the first name on the English champions’ transfer agenda.
United are toying with the notion of tempting Barca with £25 million for Fabregas, and have reportedly made “initial contact” with the Spanish champions to discuss the matter.
Alcantara meanwhile, has played down the percolating rumour that he too could move to Old Trafford.
"I just live my life and I am very happy," he told reporters.
"I enjoy it in Barcelona because I have lived through some great times but we will see what happens after the (Under 21) Euros.
"Any player is used to living with rumours about him and they just cannot affect you."
Can you see Cesc at United next season?
