Real Madrid’s unofficial media mouthpiece, Marca, is reporting that senior players have given president Florentino Perez an ultimatum: It’s Mou or Us.
Marca says that club captains Iker Casillas and Sergio Ramos met Perez and Real’s general manager, Jose Angel Sanchez, on Tuesday, and warned of a player revolt if Mou is retained as manager next season.
Earlier this season, Ramos had a public spat with The Special One, and recently Casillas was dropped from the team by the spiky Portuguese manager, even though he is regarded by many as the best ‘keeper in the world.
Mourinho has apparently already decided to leave the Bernabeu at the end of the season, and has been linked to a host of top European clubs.
However, Real’s players reportedly want a guarantee that Mourinho will be replaced, or they warn they will seek greener pastures themselves.
Marca says that Real’s players insisted to Perez and Sanchez that they are committed to the club’s cause, and even recently held a meeting to rally themselves for the rest of the season. But tellingly, none of the coaching staff were invited to the meeting.
Casillas and Ramos reportedly insisted that Real will play every remaining match this season “as if it were a final”, and that they are sure their run of bad form is behind them.
They will make an especial push in the Champions League, where they stand to share 10 million euros if they win the competition.
And while they will take orders from Mourinho, it is clear they will not like it.
"Boss, it's Mourinho or us,"Marca says was the message from Casillas and Ramos.
“In a nutshell, if Mourinho continues managing Real Madrid next season, several of the top players on the squad will request transfers,” Marca concluded.
