Liverpool suffered an embarrassing FA Cup exit as they lost 3-2 to League One Oldham Athletic at Boundary Park on Sunday.
With Dean Furman in action for South Africa at the African Cup of Nations, it appeared his team coped just fine without the midfielder.
Liverpool fell behind just three minutes into the match when Matt Smith headed home a cross from Youssouf M’Changama.
However, the lead did not last long as Luis Suarez made it 1-1 after 17 minutes with a piercing strike from the edge of the area.
The Reds thought they had a second goal on 24 minutes when Suarez glanced a Jordan Henderson free-kick into the back of the net, but the Uruguayan was ruled to be offside. From there, the Reds appeared to boss proceedings and again Suarez came close as he drew out a save from Dean Bouzanis.
As the match looked to enter half-time the Latics stole the lead for the second time when Smith was gifted the easiest of finishes after Brad Jones fumbled a simple cross from Reece Wabara.
Three minutes after the break, Oldham took a two-goal cushion as Wabara then turned goalscorer with a beautiful close-range header.
Brendan Rodgers’ men refused to give up hope and were rewarded with a second goal ten minutes from time as Joe Allen turned in a cross from defender Martin Skrtel.
The Reds continued to push hard for an equaliser with Daniel Sturridge trying his luck from long range, but it wasn’t to be as the League One outfit held on for the historic victory.
