Arsenal fans had only just stopped laughing about David Villa’s rejection of Spurs, when karma came a-knocking.
The Gooners have had high hopes of securing arch goal poacher Gonzalo Higuain from Real Madrid, ever since reports began suggesting his move to the Emirates was imminent. Even his father recently claimed that London was beckoning to Pipita.
Argentine international Higuain is a top quality finisher, in spite of his recent travails in front of goal at the Bernabeu, and the English Premier League would be lucky to have him.
And Real Madrid have suddenly appeared to realise that they should be doing more to keep a player of Higuain’s talents, which will come as a body blow to Arsenal.
Los Blancos president Florentino Perez claims that the club does not want to sell the striker.
He also says that Arsenal are yet to even test Real’s will with an offer.
“We don't want Higuain to leave,” Perez told blankly told Univision.
“What's more no-one from Arsenal has come to us and made us any offers at all for him.
“There are no offers on the table.”
For the rivals of London foes Arsenal and Spurs, their struggle to secure top striking targets is once again a source of transfer silly season mirth.
And it will be interesting to see if both clubs now enter a cockney mudslinging match, in a bid to land want-away Aston Villa hit-man, Christian Benteke.
