The next instalment of Gareth Bale’s Champions league dream will have to wait, after he was ruled out of Real Madrid’s clash with FC Copenhagen on Wednesday night.
The Welshman’s Madrid career is hard to quantify so far.
He enjoyed his Champions League debut with a cameo in their scorching group opener against Galatasaray but has been a somewhat of a peripheral component of their less than impressive form in La Liga.
Tonight was to be his first Champions League start at the Bernabeu, another glittering milestone in this exciting chapter of his career and one that could have erased some of the hurt of Atletico Madrid’s smash and grab at the same stadium last week.
Instead, the milestone is on ice along with Bale’s left-thigh, which he appears to have injured against Los Rojiblancos.
While the injury is not considered serious, Bale was not able to train with his team-mates on Tuesday and is therefore unable to play against Copenhagen tonight.
Angel Di Maria has taken Bale’s place in the first XI, and will line up alongside Karim Benzema, Isco and Cristiano Ronaldo in Los Blancos’ attack.
Meanwhile, Bale is left to ruminate on the frustrating fact that he has played just 2hr, 12min for his new club, since they made him the most expensive footballer in history.
