Rafa Defends Rotation Again

New club, same boring criticism.

Napoli manager, Rafa Benitez, has been forced to defend his predilection for changing his starting line-up again.

The Spaniard encountered the same issue at Liverpool, Inter Milan and Chelsea, but won trophies at all of those clubs.

He has started his tenure in Naples with roaring success, but has been held to blame after Napoli dropped their first points of the Serie A season on Wednesday night.

They were held 1-1 by Sassuolo, Serie A's bottom side, who were destroyed 7-0 at home by Inter Milan in the last round of matches.

All of Raul Albiol, Miguel Britos, Jose Callejon and Lorenzo Insigne were kept on the bench by Benitez, leading to criticism that excessive rotation was responsible for Napoli failing to win for the first time this season.

But Benitez insists that in the context of Napoli’s long season, in which they hope to progress deep into the Champions League as well as to contest the Serie A, rotating is the right thing to do.

And he says even with changes, Napoli should have been strong enough to beat Sasuolo, who played well.

“We have enough quality in our squad to make changes when we have a lot of games in a short space of time,” Benitez told Sky.

“We should have won this game with the players we had.”

We just did not play at the level we’ve shown so far, but my team played with the right mentality, it’s just Sassuolo played a good game,” he added.

“Their heavy defeat to Inter was just a one-off. It’s only normal that the odd game does not go the way you want it, but I would not say these are two points lost.”
