PSG Wanted Ozil & Mata

PSG boss Laurent Blanc admits that the French champions tried to sign Mesut Ozil from Real Madrid.

The German international midfielder joined Arsenal on transfer deadline day, and has already set about proving why he is worth the record transfer fee Arsenal spent to sign him.

Blanc also admits that he had hoped to sign Juan Mata from Chelsea, when speculation arose that the Spaniard could be surplus to requirements at Stamford Bridge.

However, he says that an official approach was only made for Ozil.

"Both of them would have done us good," Blanc said of the midfield duo on Radio RMC.

"The only attempt made, as far as I know, was for Ozil."

Meanwhile, Blanc has addressed the unease among the PSG faithful, after local hero Mamadou Sakho was sold to Liverpool.

The 23-year-old central defender rose through the ranks at the Parc des Princes, and was a crowd favourite, having become the youngest skipper in Ligue 1 history when just a teenager.

And while he faced stiff competition from PSG’s big-name and expensive recruits, the feeling was he still had time to realise his immense potential at his boyhood club.

However, Sakho- who has wowed Liverpool’s backroom staff by breaking a weights machine in training- made the tough decision to seek a new challenge elsewhere in a World Cup year, and Blanc was ultimately powerless to convince him to stay.

"In the off-season we signed Marquinhos, who plays in the same position," he explained.

"There were five central defenders for two places, so there was one too many. I said it to him.

"Initially, Mamadou accepted the competition. But we're in a World Cup year, and I know what that can produce in a player.

"He wanted to leave PSG to have more game time. He made a choice. He chose a very big club in Liverpool. I wish him the best."

PSG are missing Sakho this weekend, when they face fellow big-spenders AS Monaco for the first time in the league this season.

Brazilian defender Alex is injured, with Marquinhos set to be given his run-on debut, and tasked with the job of shackling Monaco hit-man, Radamel Falcao.
