Wayne Rooney could be on his way to Paris Saint Germain, after the French champions promised to match the wages he currently earns at their English counterparts, Manchester United.
And according to a United ‘insider’, referred to by ESPN, Rooney is opening up to the move.
The England international had already begun to question his future at Old Trafford even before David Moyes, his old coach and antagonist, was appointed to take the place of now retired Alex Ferguson.
PSG made an official approach to United as early as February, when they heard United would sell Rooney if the price was right.
And negotiations have been underway ever since, with Rooney apparently warming to the notion of a life in Paris, provided his salary- estimated to be close £300 000 per week- is met by PSG.
‘Luke warm’ may be a better way to describe Rooney’s feeling about joining PSG. The United striker would prefer to remain in England, but so far there is a lack of opportunity for him to play anywhere but United in the Premier League.
PSG have earmarked Napoli forward Edinson Cavani, should their fishing expedition for Rooney fail to land a catch. But it is believed that they foresee a Rooney/Zlatan Ibrahimovic frontline as a dream combination.
For United’s part, ESPN suggests that the potential sale of Rooney to PSG “would set in motion a chain of events” ending with the transfer of in-demand Borussia Dortmund striker, Robert Lewandowski, to Old Trafford.
Dortmund are loath to lose their prolific hit-man. But you can bet that if they had to choose between selling him to United or his other reported suitor, Bayern Munich, there would only be one winner in that transaction.
