Lyon self-combusted at home on Sunday, to leave Ibra-inspired PSG in cruise control at the top of the French Ligue 1.
By signing league title magnet Zlatan Ibrahimovic, PSG were almost pre-ordained to win the French top flight trophy this season.
And the big Swede is seemingly firing them to league glory like only he knows how to, scoring his 21st goal in 21 appearances as PSG saw off Bastia 3-1 on Friday night.
That result meant Lyon needed to beat Lille at home on Sunday to remain within touching distance of Carlo Ancelotti’s expensively assembled Ibra vehicle.
However, the pressure was too much to bear for second-place Lyon, who slipped to a 3-1 defeat, and fell six points behind PSG.
It is turning out to be a watershed season for PSG, thanks to the oil billions from Qatar that have poured into the club’s bank account.
Not only are they on course to annex the French league title, but they also qualified for the last-16 of the Champions League at the top of their group.
This week they will embody the stark difference in strength of economy between France and neighbour Spain, when flush with cash they take on perpetually broke Valencia for a place in the quarter-finals.
If Ibra can fire PSG deep into this season’s Champions League, a new era of European football may indeed be afoot.
