Confederations Cup

Teams: Japan v Mexico

Date: 22 June 2013

Venue: Estadio Mineirao

Japan and Mexico close out their Confederations Cup campaigns with both sides failing to yet win a point at the tournament.

Mexico, who came into the tournament stuttering in their World Cup qualifying campaign, have slotted just a single penalty through Javier Hernandez as they were beaten by Brazil and Italy.

Japan, on the other hand, bounced back from defeat against Brazil in the tournament opener by taking Italy to the sword - only to be undone by a late strike by Sebastian Giovinco in their 4-3 defeat.

This meant that both sides are unable to make it to the next round, no matter what happens between Italy and Brazil on the same day.

The Samurai Blue have some superb attacking talent in the likes of Honda and Manchester United attack Shinji Kagawa, but their defence fails to complement their potential going forward.

Mexico coach Jose de la Torre may decide to give his younger fringe players a run after what has been a largely dim display from his side.

In head-to-head meetings, Japan won their first game back in 1996 but Mexico went on to win the next three. Their last battle came in the 2005 Confederations Cup, where Mexico won 2-1.
