Poyet For Black Cats

Sunderland seem not to have been warned off hiring a manager without Premier League experience, despite Paolo Di Canio’s short stay at the club.

The Black Cats are reportedly close to appointing another manager without top-flight experience- Gus Poyet- on a three-year deal.

The Uruguayan was sacked by Brighton and Hove Albion last season for “gross misconduct”, although he continues to deny the charge.

He has coached at Swindon and Leeds previously, and led Brighton to the semi-finals of the Premier League playoffs last season.

Poyet’s only real top-flight coaching experience came when he was assistant to Juande Ramos at Tottenham Hotspur.

He has not disguised his ambition to manage in the Premier League, and even cannily said that Sunderland were one of the teams he was watching with interest, just in case Di Canio got sacked.

"I planned that over the first matches of this season I would pay a lot of attention to the teams I thought could be in trouble,” Poyet said.

“Of course I watch Chelsea, Arsenal, Manchester but there was a group of teams who, if they didn't start well, I thought I could have a chance.

“I was watching Sunderland a lot. People were talking a lot about them in the summer because of Paolo and how many new players they had. So I've seen quite a lot of them."

Poyet is said to be the first-choice of Sunderland’s technical director, Roberto De Fanti, who oversaw the purchase a virtual squad of foreigners during the off-season.

He believes former Chelsea and Spurs defender Poyet could be the man to revitalise Sunderland’s flagging fortunes, and inspire their cosmopolitan squad to avoid what looks set to be a long flirtation with the drop this season.
