With the captain of one of Africa's national teams recently being accused of age-cheating, here are some more players who were reportedly found to be lying about their date of birth.
Report: Messi's Friendship With Pique Over
Earlier this week, it was reported that Porto centre-back Chancel Mbemba has become embroiled in a scandal regarding his age. According to Portuguese outlet Corriero de Manha, he has used four different dates of birth in his career.
It is said that the defender, who claims to be 27 years old, has previously told friends he was born in 1990, which would make him 31 years old today. As a result, Porto reportedly want to let him go at the end of the season when his contract expires, after it was also revealed that the former Newcastle United defender's age had been investigated in 2013 too.
This is not the first time a player has been questioned over his age, with there having been similar cases in Brazil with Carlos Alberto and in India with Gourav Mukhi, whose story is perhaps the most bizarre.
Mukhi gained fame in his native homeland after becoming the Indian Super League's youngest-ever goalscorer at 16, only for it to be later discovered that he was, in fact, 28 years old.
As for Alberto, the Brazilian had become recognised as one of his country's most promising players following his exploits in the Selecao's FIFA World Youth Championship-winning campaign in 2003 before he admitted to lying about his age by five years.
As punishment, he was slapped with a one-year ban from the sport.
