Pique Earns Barca Draw

Barcelona came from a goal down to earn a point in the 1-1 La Liga clash against Levante at the Ciudad de Valencia on Sunday.

Levante started off the game strongly and stunned the La Liga champions when they opened the scoring in the 10th minute when Loukas Vyntra rose highest in the box to head past Víctor Valdés in the Barcelona goal.

Barca responded almost immediately and levelled matters through almost an identical goal to the one they had just conceded.

The Catalan club equalised when central defender Gerard Pique did well to get his head to a Xavi corner and plant the ball past Levante goalkeeper Navas and make it 1-1 with 19 minutes on the clock.

Xavi then should have hit the target in the 35th minute when the ball fell kindly to the midfielder on the edge of the box, but the Spain international could only drag his shot wide of the right-hand post.

Messi who had been relatively quiet, then had a free-kick in the 40th minute which curled just to the left of Navas’ left-hand post leaving the scores level at half-time.

Barcelona then piled on the pressure as the second-half started, with Fabregas forcing a save out of Navas with a long range effort in the 54th minute.

The Levanted shot-stopper then pulled off a miraculous save as he denied Messi with a block, before getting back to his feet and claws the ball off the line after the Argentine tried to score from the rebound.

The home side however did produce some goal scoring opportunities of their own and almost took the lead when Simao played a good cross into the box but Ivanschitz's header towards the far post was well saved by Valdes in the 68th minute.

Barcelona dominated possession and saw 70% of the ball while the home side preferred to try and catch the Catalans on the break.

Neither side could find a second goal and the current champions would have to make due with a share of the spoils.
